It'll be Donna Vivino. The last couple times I've gone to see a show coming through town; an understudy butchered a part of it. When I saw Phantom, the Meg in it didn't fit with the rest of the cast at all. I was like "I don't remember a nineth grade cheerleader in this!" She was TOO modern and too ditzy. I dunno know what she did for the director to get that part. And I saw Avenue Q, the Brian was too young and skinny! I mean really.... LOL, I might be too picky

I read that and wondered how the heck this thread ended up talking about Wicked. I had to go back and re-read, but now I see the connections. XD Are sea-witches born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?
Have there ever been any Ursula-centric fics around here? I know they exist, but I dunno if any are extensive/well-done.

My very first Mermaid fic was a oneshot about Ursula that was actually HEAVILY inspired by Wicked. I'm not sure I'd qualify it as "well-done". It was from like four years ago after all.
But honestly I haven't really seen much Ursula-based that I liked. Zoccarris had that missing scene with Vanessa, which was great, but mostly from Eric's perspective. And of course every scene with Ursula in The Things We Don't Plan For is pure gold, but she isn't really the focus of that story either.

Actually, I loved that one-shot, Elphie. I thought it made a nice cross-over without "insert Ursula as Elphaba" Which I seriously dislike when people just use characters from one thing and copy and paste them into another. It's one thing if it's supposed to be funny. Like when we talk about if Disney made Firefly XD Thank you so much, Elphie That's so sweet of you to say, I was considering doing a little background story for Ursula, but I don't want to give a lot away if I do intend to do it. And of coarse you know about my latest little plot bunny besides that

Aaaaagh, aaangst! I want more TTWDPF. And BSS. And AHIKTC. And Until We Meet Again. And...you'll get a little surprise in the next couple weeks, Jess.
I loved the Vanessa TLM extended fic. Vanessa's just awesome on her own. I'd like to think she used Ariel's voice more than magic to hypnotize Eric, just because it had powers of its own. Bwah ha ha ha.

*Squee!*
Zavi, you're referring the Siren-esque thing we talked about in that power-tangent we went on in the Eric thread right?
Cause I'd agree with that.
Anywhoozle I think I eventually want to write an AU where Ursula never went evil and is indeed the "cool aunt". That might be a really fun dynamic.
King Triton: She's fallen in love with a human! A HUMAN!
Ursula: Are you through Dram Queen-ing or do you need another few minutes? Honestly though, It may not be as bad as you think...
KT: NOT AS BAD AS I THINK?
Ursula *rolling eyes*; Oh, for the love of Neptune. You'll burst a blood-vessel if you don't calm down. Let me talk to her first. If you do it while you're like this, you'll end up saying something you'll regret.

I read that fic and I thought it was awesome even though I've never seen Wicked or read the book. Ursula is such a great villain. The earlier villain didn't really have practical plans to me. I mean, they're evil, but what do they actually want to accomplish? What will they accomplish by defeating the protagonist? The villains really weren't as interesting in the earlier Disney movies. I mean, Maleficent's cool--but all she has is evil. But Ursula raises up questions like why is she evil? What happened to make her evil? I think that Ursula was really the first villain to sit down and make a rational plan and had goals that actually made sense.

Good point Fathom, I never thought of that.
However, a lot of characters backstories aren't really revealed right away, so those questions could apply to a lot of characters.

True, but that whole "when I lived in the palace" speech really got me interested in why she was banished.

We'll probably never know, unfortunately, unless someone wants to make something up lol..

I'll go. Assuming the sibling relationship is musical-only, Ursula was higher-up in the noble court who was responsible for a great deal of running the kingdom. The King's right-hand octo-woman if you will. She had a lot of influence, tried to stage a coup, and got found out and banished.

IHMO, what I'd like to think as far as Eric being under Ursula's spell, is that she could only control him by using something that belonged to Ariel. Cause if you see his expression when he sees Nessa, he's not all giddy and excited like with finding Ariel on the rock. Just that little part where the light touches his eyes and he goes blank- it seems like he's blinded by "love" if that makes sense. LOL
AHAHA! I'd love a fic about a non-evil Ursula. Oh, yeah she'd totally be tight with the girls. I can also see her teaching them how to flirt. "Now girls, there's nothing wrong with using a little body language." LOL

I like that idea, Elphie. You should maybe do something with it someday. You know, in 10 or 12 years when all of your plot bunnies are on paper. More or less.

Heh. If I ever do do the "Good Ursula" thing I think I'll make it a series of oneshots rather than a multi-chapter fic. Less pressure.

That'd work nicely. Be easier to write too.

Hehe, I'd love to read about cool auntie Ursula and her preachings of body language. It sounds like it'd work better as a series of one-shots, too.
I think the general consensus is that she had some struggle for power when she was *so close* to ruling the seas. Temptation went awry, she became careless, was caught, and poof! Off to the dead Leviathan where she preys on other mer-souls.
But what I want to know is the nitty-gritty stuff--how it evolved in all that. Surely she didn't wake up one day and decide to take over the kingdom. But then, I ask again: are sea-witches born wicked or do they have wickedness thrust upon them? -shrugs-
The villain in one of my favorite books actually became evil because of an accident, though she was accused of doing wrong on purpose. Some of the good guys KNEW this.Something similar could have happened to Ursula, though over the years she seems to have embraced her sea-witchiness. She never bothers to change her form to Vanessa unless she needs to.

*gasp* Just why hasn't our favorite witchy's thread been as up and alive as our best octopoid herself? I, Mare, take it upon myself to revive this thread! *plants flag*
Double post aside, one of my favorite elements about Ursula's character--her relationship to our leading lady in particular--is how she and Ariel share a lot of traits. Passion, a fiery personality, [vaulting] ambition, a "banishment" (either literal or mental), and the list goes on. I feel like there's a thin line that separates the two when you look at certain traits. I'm just waiting for somebody to play the doppelganger card for these two in fic.

Oh yes. The phrase "through the glass darkly" definitely comes to mind. It's no coincidence Nessa looks so much like Ariel. The writes of the musical tried to play it up somewhat but sadly it got lost in the muddled plot changes and lackluster ending.

Its such a brilliant move on the film makers part. i wish they would have made it more evident that Ursula was his sister. It makes sense that Triton wouldn't want Ariel to go down the same path, so you understand his protectiveness of her ^^
