LOVED IT!!
Spoilers ahead now
I LOVED it <3333
It was such a pleasent surprise to me. The thing about the Pirates movies for me is that I adored the first one, but DMC and AWE are movies I only watch because there are things about them I like/love but the over all movies I don't like very much. When I criticize things and express my concerns its cause I'm actually wanting to be proven wrong with these things and have things restored to the points of awesome I know they can be.
Anyhoot here's some thoughts I have on the movie.
Blackbeard: Honestly, I was most disappointed by him. I was so excited when he came out with his beard on fire (like the real BB) looking completely awesome, but then he wasn't even that bad. Yeah, bad, but he faded into the background so much of the time. They never got into why he could the voodoo thing, or how he learned it really. I was really curious but nothing was answered about it.
Angelica: I was happy to find she wasn't as annoying as I was expecting her to be. This was mostly the marketing's fault though since they put a lot of hype around her being basically the female Jack and all that. No, I don't like her as much as Lizzy, Tia, or Ana but she's certainly not an awful character. She was actually a good "straight man" to Jack. Being the "straight man" is a lot harder then people think it would be. You have to set things up just perfectly otherwise the punchline falls flat.
"What were you doing in a Spanish convent???"
"I thought it was a brothel!"
that killed me xD.
My dislikes about her: she was so even tempered, and had a soft spot for Phillip. Its kinda odd she would even consider being a pirate. Yeah, she wanted to "save" her dad but they're relationship was underdeveloped and just not very interesting for me. It just made her look *beast voice* stupid. At the end she was like "Wah! My dad" and I'm thinking "Uh, he did try to kill you to save himself." Will wasn't that naive. It just weakens the character to me. It would be one thing if she was super young and attached to Black Beard cause she didn't really have anyone else but in this case she needed to put on some big girl pants
Phillip: He was handsome and noble and must have spent a lot of time building hospitals and orphanages from the looks of him without a shirt.
I liked him and that he provided the kind voice of reason (such an unpopular thing to be but I have an appreciation for those charries) but I also found myself not liking him as much as I thought I would. He was a good character but something about him was lacking. I dunno but what bugged me most I think was when he told Black Beard he couldn't be redeemed. (Way to stick to you guns about everyone getting a chance....) Black Beard was a bad dude but for a missonary to say something like that just doesn't bode well with me. You could argue he was growing more cynical from being around the pirates and I could see that but that bugged me since a sweet guy shouldn't make himself the judge and jury on those things. Just my opinion of course ^^
Syrena: Again, I wanted to love her character so much and I did like her (I'm a sucker for mermaids) and her more quiet ways and emotions but I just didn't care that much. We never really found out why she was different then the other mermaids, like with Phillip it was just kind of implied. I think as time goes on and I see the movie more I'll pick up more little things I do like about her and Phillip but for now I'm just going off first impressions
The MERMAIDS!!
I can not express enough how awesome they were. I was actually hoping they would be in it more. I wanted to know more about the girl who started singing to them in the first place, I thought she was pretty dang interesting. Either way I wanted to know more about them as a whole. They were certainly intelligent creatures, but I was left with wanting to know more about their culture and why there were only females? Were they something Tia Dalma crafted? Were they like those lizards that can reproduce a-sexually and a natural phenomenon? Were there mermen but we just didn't see them and they are like lionesses that are in charge of the hunting?
Groves. I'm probably one of the few people that was bummed about him. My favorite boys in blue are now all dead
. What mostly disappointed me with him was that I was hoping/expecting him to go rogue or be a wild card. However there was like no purpose for him, kinda useless to bring back the actor and character. I wanted to know more about what he was feeling/thinking. After all the crap with the EITC, Norry dying (I was geting a big brother and little brother vibe from the first), and now having to take orders from a man they had fought against would be enough of reason for him to say "Forget this!" since the system was so corrupted. There was so much that could have been done but just wasn't.
Barbossa. I've always liked his character but this time I flat out loved him. Come on, did anyone actually believe he was a loyal privateer? You always get the sense with him he knows perfectly well what he's doing, even if it doesn't always work out the man rocks at staying ahead of most of the others.
Jack! This is the first time that I've loved him every bit as much in the first film. So entertaining and energetic, but I could take him seriously again at the same time.
