In the original story of the The Little Mermaid, the prince marries another woman and the mermaid dies and becomes a daughter of air. While watching Disney's TLM for the first time, what was the first thing that came to your mind? "Ah, too bad Ariel is going to die and lose Eric to another woman?" or "Ariel will win Eric!"

I actually never did see it in theaters. However, I do remember my sister renting it from the video store when it was released on video and being in first grade when the school showed it after lunch. The funny thing is, it really didn't interest me then.
Of course, when I sat down and watched the whole thing in 2009, I appreciated it more, but of course, by that point, pretty much knew what was going to happen.

I was a little less than two when the movie came out so I don't actually remember, though I did see it in theaters. I didn't discover the original story til I saw the Faerie Tale Theatre version, and I remember being VERY upset. Especially since it didn't even have the "Spirit of the Air" epilogue. Childhood Trauma FTW!

Youngin that I am I wasn't born when TLM was in theaters (I was a BatB baby) and my parents aren't theater-going people anyway, but I've been told it was the first movie I responded to/was obsessed with. I knew an original story existed but never got around to reading it until later, and by then I knew it was gonna be a downer.

I was almost 7 when it came out, but didn't get to see it in theaters. There were 6 of us and we didn't go very often. And it probably didn't come to the theater closest to us anyway, since we lived in the boonies. We did go see Beauty and the Beast though, when it finally arrived in Natchez four months after it was released.
Didn't get to see it when it was re-released either, though I wanted to.
I've always thought of them as two separate stories, with the Disney one being inspired by the original.

Concerning the original story, my experience with it is similar to Zavi's. I honestly like the Disney version much better. I've always thought of them as two separate stories, with the Disney one being inspired by the original. Same here.

I saw it in theaters a week after I turned three and remember going with my mom, dad and four older siblings xD Concerning the original story, my experience with it is similar to Zavi's. I honestly like the Disney version much better. I've always thought of them as two separate stories, with the Disney one being inspired by the original. Same here. LOL, pretty much my thoughts too. I've read the original before and own it. But to me, they're awesome in different ways. We rented a cartoon of the original when I was really little since I was obcessed but the video store didn't have it, so my mom picked up the other one. By the time the movie was over, I was crying and kept asking my mom to rewind it since I knew I missed the part where she and the prince got married. But no, she just turned into foam 0_o. Again, when people talk about how much better the old story is then the Dinsey version, I tend to think they're pompus Sorry, but they usually are. lolz. I like the character development much better in the Disney version. Granted a lot of the old fairy tales were kind of blah with character development, but you didn't get a sense of anyone else really except the little mermaid. LOL, anyone think if Eric heard the real version he'd be kind of pissed? xD

In the original version she doesn't turn into foam. She becomes one of the children of the air. I've often wondered what would happen if she attained her soul, became mortal and fell in love with one of the prince's descendants. I can see her watching over them because of her love for the prince.

It's been percolating for years but I haven't gotten any of it right yet. If it ever gels I'll write it.
