I'm just wondering what is the hype about diabetes? They say it's serious but why is it so serious?

It's serious because it can kill you. My mom is diabetic and it runs in her family.
There are two types, type I insulin-dependent and Type II non-insulin-dependent. Most people have type II and it had a variety of causes. It's basically a failure of the pancreas to produce insulin properly which leads to buildup of blood glucose levels. When those levels get too high they can put you into a coma and you die.
Type I diabetes is a failure of the pancreas to produce insulin PERIOD.
Insulin is the hormone that the body uses to convert carbohydrates into fuel, and it does that by breaking down the sugar molecules. Without carbs the human body cannot function properly.
Does that help? It's a very serious disease. It can also lead to nerve damage, blindness, kidney failure and a host of other problems including poor circulation and amputation.
