Nerd that I am, my present for finishing NaNoWriMo was a cup of ice cream and a good hour-and-a-half with this film. Watched the movie for the 1,000,001st time, and it got me thinking. What's your favorite part of the film, visually? What grips you the most, animation-wise or effects/lighting/background-wise?
For me, it's the moment where Ursula steals Ariel's voice. Where she sees the hands and she recoils a bit, and you see a hint of fear on her face. Then she throws her head back and it's gone--gives me chills!
I love the lighting when Vanessa appears on the beach as well. Now, what about you all?

Those two scenes definitely make the list. Also, Part of Your World. So hauntingly beautiful. Also the Storm sequence. And, I know this is highly predictable, but I love the sunlight falling on Ariel and Eric as she sings to him.

When Eric sees Vanessa on the beach for the first time. It's so perfectly spooky without crossing the line into being cheesy.

And, I know this is highly predictable, but I love the sunlight falling on Ariel and Eric as she sings to him. Most definitely. The predictability AND the fact that I totally agree, of course. -cheesy grin- The opening shot when Eric's ship bounds into view also gets me. And anything, anything involving that gorgeous red hair. I want to know how Ariel can do all that without once getting hair in her face.

D=! i love the Part of Your World reprise part where her red hair is just whipping around her XDDD and then the waves. YEAH that stereotypical scene that is shown in the new Disney opening. LOVE IT XD =3 she looks so pretty!!!
i'll think of more scenes when i rack my brain harder XD it's fried right now =3

In general I just love looking at the water effects, too. The way that light bounces off of everything and how they captured the "feel" of being underwater. Kudos to everybody who animated all those bubbles! The sheer number of them is amazing.
For the most part I'm 100% in love with all the visuals, but there are a few places that bug me. The CG background with the stairs is really dated by now, so it's not their fault, and the other CG background when Ursula grows 50ft tall works really well. The CG ship hasn't shown its age IMO. Very well-done. But those stairs...
Does anyone else have any gripes about the floor tiles in Eric's dining hall? They bug me more than anything else in the film! They make the place look like a freaking McDonalds. I know they were probably intended to be all fancy and marble, but the simplistic design makes them look far too much like cheap linoleum. A more regal color scheme would've worked so much better.
