I think it might be an almost How to Train Your Dragon thing where merpeople are legitimately dangerous creatures (but so are humans!) and humans have good reasons to fear them, but their intentions aren't malicious. They're protecting themselves and their families from the ships or they're just as afraid of humans as they are to merpeople.

Right but the premise would need to be an AU for that. Because in the movie merpeople rarely surface. So in that context, where Eric would maybe have seen a flash of *something* underwater but not more than that, I think he'd be intrigued by the stories and definitely want to believe, but have the 'practical voice' whispering in his ear too.

Yep yep. That itself created an awesome little conflict though. Gahhh plotbunnies! Somebody really does need to take this.

Historically, mermaids are the mermaids in Pirates. The concept HCA went with was new at the time. No one had ever depicted a mermaid in a positive light before that. At least not in anything that became popular.

Yeah, I think most people know about the siren legends from Greek mythology. I was wondering what the exact background behind this universe would be since in RL there are no merpeople so when making a story you could tweak the legend and mythology here or there.

You guys know Matt Bomer from White Collar? I was thinking the other day he'd be an awesome live action Eric, especially since there's a video somewhere on Youtube of him singing, and then I found out he's playing Darren Criss's ( whom I also think would be a good candidate ) character's brother on Glee XD. EDIT: Aaaand then I rediscovered Henry Cavill. Seriously, what is this? XD

Darren Criss is my number one choice. Sean Maher is up there for a more 'mature' Eric. Matt Bomer is another one. Henry certainly looks the part but I'd need to see how he acts and speaks before I could form an opinion.

I think Sean Maher is perfect for older Eric--I would probably either pick him or Jon Hamm ( I haven't seen too much of Hamm's acting so I'm leaning toward Sean because he was awesome in Firefly ). I've only seen a little of Henry's work in the Immortals, and I thought he had great screen presence there, though the script left much to be desired, but I think he has a chance. He's going to be in the Superman movie next year though, so that should show a bit more of his acting chops. But yeah, I think Darren is my number one choice right now as far as acting goes ( not to mention he can sing ). Remember when he used to do Disney covers? If he ever does 'Her Voice' I will die happy XD.
