video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8084316511153870936&e For the record, I never gave you that link XD. Does anyone think that Eric had sort of an awkward stage when he was younger? I sort of think so ( if anyone has seen Thingamajigger, you'll know why ). I'd imagine that that would partly contribute to his low self-worth, that and being in his father's shadow, who IMO was this great king that everyone expected Eric to be like.

Ohhh yes. I fully agree that there was an "all arms and legs" stage while he was still growing.

-shifty eyes- Thank you.
I think I was horrified the first time I watched Thingamajigger post-childhood. It didn't cross my mind that it was an awkward phase until a couple of minutes in. XD But yes, I'm sure he did.
While we're on that subject, is it just me or does anyone else think that Eric's really skinny in spin-offs? Kingdom Hearts comes first to mind. I mean, he wasn't ever Mr. Buff Sailorpants, but after re-playing KHII I was wondering when Eric lost so much weight. He's still cute, though. :P
I think the awkward phase would run emotionally anyway--what would you do if you were in angsty teenage-dom and had a kingdom to learn to run, too? I'm sure Eric wans't ever happy about that, especially if he couldn't go sailing.

I've never played Kingdom Hearts so I can't comment on how he looks in that. But nearly every teenage boy goes through that skinny beanpole stage. One of my brothers was a 6'3" string bean until he'd been married for a year! He's still all arms and legs, but you can see him if he turns sideways.

Yeah, he is a little bean poley in some of the angles.

I've noticed that too! Not too long ago I brought up Eric's picture in the journal in KH2 and I saw how bean-poley he looked. I was under the impression that he was a bit on the slim side ( "handsome and refined and slim" ), but you can see in the movie that he does have quite a bit of muscle from being a sailor, but he's not as buff as say Hercules.

Yeah, I always noticed that Eric was a little scrawny in that episode. And his hair was at an awkward length too! I just can't have it long; it's just weird. And I was thinking (because I saw TLM on Broadway the Wednesday before it closed) and I thought about another Musical-Eric/Movie-Eric difference. I realized that though I will always love Eric, I don't like certain "rebellious" aspects of his characterization in the musical because it makes him whiny and selfish, wanting to go off and sail all the time without any regard for the well-being of his people. In the musical, everyone (Grim, Car, the kingdom) has a problem because Eric is sluffing off his responsibilities to the kingdom. But in the movie, you get no sense that Eric is not responsible or a good ruler,. All that anyone (again, Grim, Car, the kingdom) has a problem with is the fact that Eric isn't "happily settled down with the right girl". It's not a matter of the kingdom's well-being, but Eric's. I think that's a really big difference, and I think they changed that in the musical to make more of a connection between Ariel and Eric with the whole "I wanna do what makes me happy"-thing. But I like it better that Eric is more of a solid ruler whose concern for his people has started to overshadow his need for personal happiness. It's a little angstier that way, right guys?

Good points, Aquisha. I hadn't thought of it that way before.

I'm having that problem in my writing right now! It's definitely hard balance to strike, because at most points Eric is NOT ready to take the throne, but he'd take it seriously when the time came. He just wouldn't be confident. He's not irresponsible; he just doesn't know what the heck he's doing. Movie!Eric nailed that point better than Musical!Eric.

Yeah, someone I know who actually loathes Eric made that point. I agree that he came off like that, and I like how in the movie he's more willing to sacrifice his happiness for that of his people. But it almost seems like they took that aspect of Eric's character and gave it to Ariel ( when she breaks the shell ). That's sort of bittersweet to me because Ariel seems less selfish, which I suppose is a good thing, but Eric seems more selfish with the whole "I don't wanna be king!" thing.

I've never heard that point from Eric-haters. Most people I know who don't like him just think he's a scrawny little wimp. However, Ariel doesn't fall for scrawny wimps who shrivel in the face of sea-witches. (:
I don't think selfishness on the part of Musical!Eric ever crossed my mind, but I know there's one rendition of Fathoms Below where Eric, like, yells in Grim's face: "That's not the life for me, Grimsby!". It had me miffed for a while. I think Eric just believes he's going to screw the whole King thing up and sailing, to him, is something he's confident about. He probably can clear his mind on the sea--always good for curing that overwhelmed feeling!
Cutest Disneyland Paris Eric EVAR. One Step Closer all over again. Brace yourselves, lest you succumb to the barrage of warm fuzzies!

I heard that rendition and that part sort of does annoy me, but his solo afterward always gets a swoon from me. Oh Sean..XD
I mean, I get where they're coming from with the whole reluctant ruler thing, but I believe he doesn't think he'll be the greatest king, but he does want to make a difference.
That video is so amazingly cute! Eric is very handsome ( then again, when wasn't he? ). It's things like this that make me want to move to Paris and watch Ariel and Eric's antics at DLP all day XD.

At the risk of repeating what's already been said about Eric being reluntant but not rebelious- I agree. Also, I have to say I prefer my men on the lean side (if you've seen teh guys I dated you'd know it was true lolz) I like em build for speed, not power. Honestly, he's the same size as Phillip (who btw, I rarely hear everyone talk bad about) and other Disney guys. Some people just don't pay attention LOL! That Eric looks like Justin Timberlake to me XD Look at the last five second of the video lolz DX Vi, I want to be happy for you, but I'm really freaking jealous XD Give "Eric's" booty a pinch for me LOL

As a fangirl of the unloved Milo Thatch, I'm the same way. My friends complain that I have no taste in men IRL. XD It's the brown hair and glasses every time. I'm hopeless for nerds, what can I say?
...Justin Timberlake? -watches again- Really? I don't see it...maybe his eyes...-scratches head- That Eric has an adorable nose, though. Just had to say that.
Is he there at DLP every day as a character you meet or just in parades/events? I dunno if he dances with Ariel consistently (if he did, that'd be awesome) or if that was just an event.
Segue-ing back to movie!Eric, how long do y'all think it would take for him to settle into his noble role? Assuming his coronation happens sometime soon after Eric and Ariel marry. I feel like Ariel would be a big help in getting him confident with his place in life, and diving into things would quell his unease quicker than he thought. As quickly as a sailor can get used to being king, anyway.

That's a tough question! It could be anything from weeks to months to years, really.

LOL! That Eric looks like Justin Timberlake to me XD Look at the last five second of the video lolz Omg, you know what, I can kind of see it when he nods at the camera XD. But he is cute anyway. Eric really isn't that scrawny at all, especially compared to Peter Pan *grumbles*. Anyway, I'd be disturbed if he was as muscular as say, Gaston. I think it probably took Eric a while to get used to his role. I definitely don't think that he got married right after the battle with Ursula, since he probably sustained some injuries from getting tossed around by 100-ft waves, not to mention some emotional trauma from almost seeing his girlfriend get killed by a mile-high sea-witch, and almost dying himself. When he does get coronated, I think it took a few months, and even years for it to set in. I agree that Ariel was probably a huge help to him, definitely with the self-confidence issue.

Eww, Melissa, the mental images that quote produced make me in need of serious brain bleach. Somebody should make convenient packages of that stuff. Brain bleach to-go pens: apply directly to your forehead. -cheesy grin-
Has that ever happened in fanfic? Like, ever? I don't recall Eric ever sustaining serious injuries when he probably should have. Not that many fics start right after the battle. "Too Late" comes to mind (which I can't get enough of and read for inspiration all the time), but I don't think that counts. I recall Eric being unconscious for a good portion of one, but my memory's fuzzy.
I really don't know how long it would take for him to fully assimilate--a few years, maybe, but jumping right into things would get him used to the job more quickly than he worried about. And -resists going off on a tangent connecting this to David Clement-Davies fiction- he'd appreciate freedom and sailing more if he had his duties, yeah? It would make his time with Ariel all the more special. (:
...but then how did having Melody toss up this equation? If he wasn't fully used to being king yet, having a daughter could certainly freak him out.
