I think Ariel does shed tears when she cries. When she cried in the grotto, you can't see her tears because obviously she's underwater. Whereas on the harbor and at the wedding, her tears are noticeable.

But even if she could as a mermaid, would she be used to that feeling? Crying to mermaids might mean more of the sobbing noises, rather than human crying (where we primarily think of tears). Am I making sense? Like how would she react to feeling her own tears for the first time?

I do like the idea of the sensation being unfamiliar and it makes sense. I wonder how Ariel felt about being so *dry* as opposed to being constantly surrounded by water? Like do you think there would be times she might crave a swim or a bath?

Absolutely. And building on that, would the texture of the water feel different to her? Certainly she'd at least be surprised at the temperature--after spending sixteen years in near-freezing temperatures, a warm bath might be just what she's looking for. I'm sure the pretty bubbles in the bath don't hurt either. I'm sure she'd miss the lack of gravity in the water and pine for a good swim from time to time, especially if Eric or Max tagged along. I can imagine her exploring different bodies of water--lakes, rivers, ponds, streams, etc. to see the differences between all of them. In my mind our girl's gonna notice all those subtle differences, given water is still a part of her. Now, which is her favorite? A nice hot bath or a shower under a waterfall? Or all of the above? Oh, the possibilities.

Swimming, singing, I can also picture her playing scavenger hunt.

Oh, the possibilities. I think she would enjoy them both for different reasons. A shower under a waterfall would be a very invigorating pick-me-up, while a hot bath would serve to calm her down after a long day. I could also see Eric having a pool built in the palace for Ariel to swim in. BTW, do you guys think she would have a great tolerance for swimming in cold water for the most part?

I do see her as having a high tolerance for cold, but that she'd LOVE warmth. in the dvd commentary part of why they set in the Medditeranean area was because a mermaid woudl be drawn to something so warm and unique after living her whole life in the cold ocean.
Mare I LOVE the thoughts you bring up with that! So much to explore! I can see her loving waterfalls. Just to stand there in her human legs while the water rushes down.

"... Medditeranean area was because a mermaid woudl be drawn to something so warm and unique after living her whole life in the cold ocean." OMGOSH THAT'S BRILLIANT XDD. suddenly, The World Above lyrics come rushing to me....all that about light and warm and sun and stuff ;3. but gah, if she really lived in freezing temperatures, i'd think her first hot bath would scald her or something [*oddly reminded of Eliza Doolittle's opposition to baths in the beginning]. talk about temperature shock. hopefully Ariel spent enough time basking in the sun to get used to such warmth =3. now i'm wondering if Ariel will ever look super old XD. obviously her skin has some wrinkle-resistance as she's spent sixteen years in the water without turning all pruneeey. OwO *imagines a sixteen-years-of-wrinkles prune Ariel* yeech. D= ...all right, that's enough banging my head against the oven.

My sister walked in the Med last summer while she was in Italy and said it was COLD. Nearly ice cold.
The Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, however, are anything but cold. In August the water can get too hot to swim in along the shore believe it or not.

Okies, new topic. i want to know if its just me or not. I personally don't think Ariel is all that pretty physically. I mean she IS. But to me what makes her beautiful is her personality and how she carries herself. If i didn't find her as awesome, to me she'd just be a buggie eyed carrot top She's not a classic beauty like Belle or Snow. But that's another reason she's my favorite, since her outer beauty shines when she's just being 'Ariel'

@coral: For some reason, I've always thought that the Mediterranean waters would be warm. I mean, it seems like it'd be warm... But when you guys put it like that, I agree that she'd find a warm bath to be a nice change of pace.
Hmm... I'd like to think that an older Ariel would look like one of those gracefully graying older women, like Gena Rowlands.
I see what you're saying, Frida. Ariel's pretty, but I don't think she quite compares to Belle or Esmeralda. But it's her personality that makes her really shine.

Right. I think Ariel is meant to be beautiful in her own way, and unique. Belle, Esme and Aurora were supposed to be known for their beauty, but I just don't think of Ariel as that way. I know a lot of people think she's too concerned about her looks. But what exactally did she do? She combed her hair with the dinglehopper cause she liked it, looked at herself when she was day-dreaming about Eric and then in the sail cloth she was so happy to be in 'human' clothes and felt pretty. It doesn't make you EVIL, either Okies, now something else I want to discuss, who do you think would be good friends with her? I can see Meg and Esme taking a big sister role to her, but I also see her as being really good friends with Jane, Mulan, and Cinderella

But Frida, don't you see? Anytime a character brushes her hair, or likes how they look in something, that so mean they're shallow!!!1
Seriously, Ariel was no more focused on her looks then any of the other Disney ladies. I could see if she talked about how she looked endlessly, but she didn't. Slightly OT, but it's pretty cool how each Disney gal has her own unique look. None of them look similar.
*thinks* Ooo, good one (I have a similar topic on Fantasmic [/plug])! I think Ariel's the sort who could get along with nearly anyone, since she's so non-judgmental and good-natured.
As part of that crossover fic I mentioned in our chat, I pictured a scene where Ariel was letting Sunni Gummi braid her hair. I think Ariel would like her company, and in turn, be looked at sort of the big sister Sunni never had. Cross-fandom, I can also see her getting on quite well with Anastasia, Marina, and Viper. I think she'd get a big kick out of Po and his humor.

No kidding! Her hair most of the time didn't even look like it was brushed Do not even TELL me that 'a different interpritation' and straight up bashing are the same thing. LOL, I'll reply to that little talk xD. Love the topic you started. xD That sounds darling about Sunny braiding Ariel's hair =) I haven't seen Sinbad, so I couldn't tell you much about Marina, but I can see Ariel liking Viper and Po xD BTW, Nicole, Serenity is going to be on the SCIFI cannel this thursday. BTW, I can see Ariel, Kaylee and River being an awesome trio xD

In other Jossverse shows Ariel would so get along with Buffy, Willow, Fred, Echo, November, and Sierra. Not so much Cordelia, Anya, Lilah, Bennet, or Adelle.

At the risk of starting a heated debate, I think Jim and Ariel would make great friends. IMHO they're too similar for them to survive as a ship, but I'm sure Ariel would jump at the opportunity to go solar-surfing with Jim. They'd cause mass mayhem and most likely get caught by the space police, but does that surprise anyone? Then they'd get back up and go for another ride. Whee!

I can see Ariel being friends with the disney heroines. She, Belle and Jasmine would make a great trio. They both want something outside of their home, want to marry for love, and have overprotective fathers! xD I think I read somewhere on Jodi Benson's website where Jodi told a fan that she is best friends with Paige O'Hara!! I can see Snow White being like a little sister to Ariel and as someone else already mentioned, Pocahontas, Meg, and Esmeralda playing the role of "big sisters" to Ariel. Tiana, Cindy, and Mulan would also make good friends for Ariel. For Pixar girls, I know Ariel would get along with Jessie. They're both fiery redheads, spunky, and both have boyfriends who are shy and know how to dance! (This also leads me to thinking that Eric and Buzz would make good buddies, too!) Same thing with Ellie. She'd get along with Princess Dot . Both Dot and Ariel know what it's like to be the youngest in the family and deal with bossy older sisters (Attina and Atta). xD Those are the girls that I can see her getting along with.

I see Ariel as having a lot of friends, cause she's just very out-going over all. I see her a having a few she's really close to, like she was with Flounder and Sebastian.
I've been rping with Kelly, for Ariel and Esme being friends, and that dynamic has been awesome to me. I see Esme as really taking a liking to her since she tries to look beyond what society says a person is/should be. Poor girls both get accused of being shallow more often then not too.
Of course the same people who call them "shallow" are also the same ones who call Beast's human form "ugly" when one of the POINTS of BatB was the appearances didn't matter.
Anyway, I also would love to see more of Ariel interacting with Sadira and Jasmine, since her their her sister in laws pretty much lolz

Has no one mentioned Max yet? You can't tell me they wouldn't be best buds. And because this is SO unbiased (if you don't already know I'm a crazy animal person, here's proof!) I could see her getting along great with all things fuzzy. Or scaly. Or just a warm body in general. Our girl's brimming with so much vivacity and fun that she'd probably find spiders cute. Don't even *start* about horsies puppies or horsies kittens horsies.
