I think deep down inside he's terrified! Ariel is too, but it'll take her a lot longer to admit it. This whole thing is something I'm playing with in the story that I won't talk about.

Aww, but I like more fic! -pouts until more Until We Meet Again is posted-
If it doesn't spoil, I'd love to hear more about Ariel herself being terrified. Do you mean she won't admit she's got a lingering fear for malicious humans, or for the new human world? Or both? 'Cause I'd totally agree on both accounts.

A little of both I think. She's left behind all she's ever known and is going into a world where she doesn't even know the proper names for things. How could that not be terrifying on some level?

It must be, though it's a hard balance to strike. Ariel seems like the person who's comfortable with not knowing, comfortable with adventure/danger, though it's apparent she's no brick. She gets scared, she needs a sense of safety (case in point: her grotto) whether physical or emotional. But at what point does she feel fear? At what point does she realize it? Express it? On the surface she's the incurable optimist, but what's deeper than that? If you do it too much, it tarnishes the happy Ariel-ness. Not good. -pants- At least for me, it's tough to keep all those points in mind.

It is a tough balance. But without that fear lurking somewhere, she ceases to be three-dimensional for me.

Amen. Personally, I'm itching to see what happens to her when her adventurings backfire and she can't rescue herself. She has been for three movies and three seasons of TV, but her luck's bound to run dry someday.

Have you read Annie's fic on Daring to Dream? It's actually about Melody, but she worked up a very interesting theory about why Ariel is always able to get out of trouble. I don't want to spoil it if you haven't read it though.

Can you link that, Rachel? I'm curious about that
That's kind of what I was trying to explore in TTWDPF with her. She was innocent in it really, but it's the "leaping before looking" that's her downfall, then she had to deal with the consiquences because of it. Would the same thing happened had she know she might get preggers? A chance, but not as great.

Thank you for reminding me of that story, Coral! The first couple of chapters looked familiar, but I never got through to the end. And what an ending I missed! This is a little off topic but I've been admiring this Ariel fanart so much that I have to link: hollybell.deviantart.com/art/Now-we-can-walk-125706276I know a lot of people don't like her pink dress, but she looks gorgeous in this!

That's beautiful!
I love the style of her pink dress. I just wish it was sea-foam green instead.

That's awesome! I really like the pink dress, though I prefer the sparkly blue one she wears at the end.

Really? I'm not a fan of the sparkly blue one so much. The color's nice but I don't like the shape of the top.

The sparkly one is okay. If I had to change/drop a dress, I'd pick that one or the pink dress. More likely the latter, though I don't dislike it as much as others (see fancomics). Too much poof for me, and the other one didn't feel as Ariel-y as the others. I liked how it was sparkling like the ocean, but I thought it looked like a giant anachronism.

WARNING!!! Costume geek coming out... I would drop the sparkly one because it's completely wrong for any time period the movie could possibly be set in. The pink one at least has some actual historical elements to it.

Yeah I agree it was an anachronism, but the reason why I like it so much is because when I was a little kid I always thought her blue sparkly dress would be an awesome Halloween costume. Plus, the spinny-kiss was always my favorite part of the movie.

I love the spinny kiss--I think everybody does. I feel like if they had the time and a plus-sized budget it could have been more spectacular (more water effects and such), but it's still good. Sort of like the BatB transformation, where you knew that it meant more than a physical change.

The spinny-kiss thing at the end was always my favorite part of the whole movie and would (and still does) make me cry. And I constantly complain that that scene should be longer with more speech... *runs off to waste some paper*. But if you've seen the Story over on FanFiction about what happens after the first movie (which has sadly been abandoned despite fans complaints) I love how the author pictured the ending! I have to say the blue dress is my favorite dress of the whole movie, oh and the pink one which doesn't bother me. It's the wedding dress I hate! Please don't judge

I love her wedding dress! My veil headpiece was a fabric covered tiara that I made myself. After I had it cut out and shaped I realized that I had subconsciously copied Ariel's tiara shape!

Cool! I like her wedding dress too. I've heard people complain about her blue outfit that she wears when Eric takes her on a tour. I think it was the bow that makes her look childish, but I think it's adorable. Though I kinda like the dress she wears on Broadway better.
